First Impressions: Lapis Re:LiGHTs

“You’re an idol, Harry!”

Lapis Re:LiGHTs is not the usual anime I enjoy watching. It’s not like I have anything against the all female cast or the vibrant art style and the kawaii characters but I just find no joy in this kind of shows. Nonetheless, for this season, I decided that I should watch everything -or at least try to- that is on offer. So, feel free to take this review with a pinch of salt, since some of you might actually enjoy this type of thing a lot.

Truth be told, I wasn’t looking forward to Lapis Re:LiGHTs. After watching it, however, I realized that I was a bit biased against it. Although I can’t say that it’s my new favorite anime, it definitely isn’t the worst I’ve ever seen. Far from it. I enjoyed the animation, the colors, some of the comedic choices and I found the plot basic, but interesting enough when you consider the fact that this anime is essentially about idols.

With this anime having a musical idol theme, I was expecting the usual J-pop sound. Probably, we’re going to hear some of that later on, but for the first episode, what we got was a very nice Disney-inspired singing style complimented by a pretty night-time city shot. Overall, I would say that the production value was better than what I expected. A pleasant surprise.

Like I said before, I am not the most knowledgeable when it comes to this type of anime. Nonetheless, despite not being a fan, I found Lapis Re:LiGHTs enjoyable and certainly worth watching. I look forward to seeing how the series will blend the idol genre with the fantasy setting and what that will sound like.
